In 1992, my mother told me that she had breast cancer. The news was devastating for me and my family. My mother- a cautious woman who had regular check-ups and mammograms, was sick with a terminal illness. One of the strongest women I knew was fighting the battle of her life. But the courage my mother exhibited throughout her battle became a template for me of how I wanted to live my entire life. In one moment, all things can change.
It has been a priority for me to get breast exams since I was in my 20’s and I share my story with young women and families. I share my story about my mother as an example for women to be smart about their health. My Mother Betty Jo Wilkes-Howard passed away in 2009, it's been ten years Mama since you received your wings this run is dedicated to you.
